So the Traditional Chinese Folktale we went over was 費長房巧遇葫蘆仙:

 A young man who saw an old man jumps into a gourd melon 葫蘆 and had a magical journal of attempting to learn magic from the old man. At the end he learned medicine instead. 

This story also tells the origin of the chengyu成語 懸壺濟世。
